Okanogan Apples, Cherries, Pears and Other Fruits

All fruits grow best in particular places where soil and climatic conditions are just right. Such a place is central Washington State. Soils are deep and rich from ages of volcanic activity in the Cascade Mountain range. The air is dry and days are long and sunny. The Cascade Range guards the approaches to the apple valleys, capturing most of the moisture from the Pacific Ocean rain clouds and storing it for gradual run-off for spring and summer usage.

Commercial apple production was started in Washington’s Okanogan Valley in the 1880’s. It was an unfriendly, desert-like country, but settles from the Eastern United States recognized that here was every necessary ingredient for a prosperous fruit industry. Young apple trees thrived in the lava ash soil. The apples grew larger and redder than ever before seen anywhere in the world, and trough transportation to market was arduous and costly, good prices and excellent production encouraged the planting of more and more trees. By 1915, Washington apples were well know among fruit merchants in New York and other large cities of the populous East. Some overseas business also began to develop.

The growing of apples became a major Washington State crop, stretching from the Yakima Valley north to Chelan, and on up the Okanogan Valley to the Canadian Border. In the 1950’s, a new storage process called Controlled Atmosphere (CA) was introduced in Washington to extend the marketing season. By holding the apples in tightly sealed cold rooms from which most of the oxygen had been removed, it was found that the fruit retained its crispness, flavor and juice many months longer that in the usual 31-degree cold storage. Now Washington State has a year around supply of fruit.
